Bolt: Preview Theme Switcher

BoltView original changelog

Bolt added a preview theme option that switches a project's preview between System, Light and Dark modes. It lives in the More preview controls (…) menu above the preview and changes only how the preview looks, not Bolt's own interface. Open in new window and Full screen also moved into that menu.

Key Takeaways

  • A preview theme switcher lets users view their project in System, Light or Dark mode.
  • The option is in the More preview controls (…) menu above the preview.
  • Only the preview changes, and Bolt's own interface appearance is unaffected.
  • A project needs both light and dark themes defined for switching to have a visible effect.
  • Open in new window and Full screen moved into the same menu.
  • Reload, Responsive mode and Device Preview stay visible above the preview for quick access.

Switch the Preview Between Light and Dark

Bolt now lets users change the theme of their project preview. From the More preview controls (…) menu above the preview, a user can choose System, Light or Dark. This makes it quick to check how an app looks in each appearance without editing code or changing device settings.

Preview Only, Not Bolt's Interface

The theme setting affects only the preview. Bolt's own appearance stays as it was. To switch between light and dark, the project needs to support both themes, so a project built with only one theme will not change.

Reorganized Preview Controls

The same menu now holds Open in new window and Full screen. The most frequently used controls stay visible above the preview: Reload, Responsive mode, and Device Preview in mobile projects. The change keeps the toolbar uncluttered while the extra options stay one click away.

Why It Matters

Light and dark support is a common expectation for modern apps. A built-in switch lets builders verify both looks while they iterate, and spot contrast or styling problems earlier.
