OpenAI has simplified the model selection experience in Codex for users authenticating via ChatGPT. As of April 7, 2026, six older models no longer appear in the Codex model picker. On April 14, those same models will be fully removed from Codex for all ChatGPT sign-in users.

What's Being Removed

The following models are no longer available in the Codex model picker for ChatGPT sign-in users:

• gpt-5.1-codex-mini
• gpt-5.1-codex-max
• gpt-5.1-codex
• gpt-5.1
• gpt-5

These models span two previous generations of the GPT-5 family. The removal completes the transition away from the GPT-5.1 line entirely, and retires the dedicated coding variants of GPT-5.2.

What Remains Available

After the cleanup, the active model lineup for ChatGPT sign-in users is:

• gpt-5.4 — the current flagship reasoning model, which absorbed the coding capabilities of GPT-5.3-Codex
• gpt-5.4-mini — a faster, lower-cost variant suitable for routine coding tasks
• gpt-5.3-codex — the dedicated coding model from the previous generation, still available for those who prefer it
• gpt-5.2 — retained as a baseline general-purpose option
• gpt-5.3-codex-spark — available exclusively to ChatGPT Pro subscribers; the high-throughput, low-latency variant designed for rapid iteration

Accessing Other Models

Users who need access to API-supported models outside this curated list retain full flexibility. Signing in with an OpenAI API key — rather than a ChatGPT account — unlocks the full range of models available through the API. Alternatively, configuring a custom model provider in Codex settings allows directing requests to any compatible endpoint.

This consolidation reflects the broader direction of OpenAI's model strategy: GPT-5.4 is positioned as the unified model that carries the specialized coding capabilities formerly exclusive to the GPT-5.3-Codex line.
