Figma: Codex to Figma (OpenAI Codex Integration)

Figma

Figma announced a deepened partnership with OpenAI on February 26, 2026, bringing bidirectional design-to-code integration between Figma and OpenAI's Codex AI coding tool. Through Figma's MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, product builders can now generate editable Figma designs directly from Codex, and push live, running UIs built in code back onto the Figma canvas as fully editable frames for iteration.

Figma and OpenAI Codex: Bidirectional Code and Design Workflows

Figma and OpenAI announced a new integration on February 26, 2026, connecting Figma's canvas directly to OpenAI's Codex AI coding environment. The partnership enables seamless, bidirectional movement between design files and code — allowing engineers to generate and iterate on Figma designs without leaving their coding workflow, and designers to pull live implementations back onto the canvas for exploration and refinement.

How the Integration Works

The integration operates through the Figma MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, the same open-standard infrastructure that powers Figma's earlier Claude Code integration. By connecting Codex to the Figma MCP server, product builders gain access to two core capabilities:

Bringing Code to Canvas

With the generate_figma_design tool exposed by the Figma MCP server, developers can take a live, running UI — built on localhost, staging, or production — and turn it into fully editable Figma frames in seconds. Rather than manually recreating a UI or exporting static screenshots, teams get a real, functioning interface directly on the Figma canvas.

Bringing Canvas to Code

The reverse direction is equally supported: Codex can retrieve context from Figma Design files, Figma Make prototypes, and FigJam boards and use that design context to inform code generation.

Who It's For

The integration deliberately avoids assuming a single role. Engineers can iterate visually without leaving their flow, and designers can work closer to real implementation without becoming full-time coders.

Context and Timing

The Codex integration arrives exactly one week after Figma's announcement of a similar partnership with Anthropic's Claude Code, which introduced the "Code to Canvas" feature. With OpenAI now offering the same core capability through Codex, Figma has positioned its MCP server as the de facto bridge between AI coding environments and the design canvas. OpenAI reports that over one million users now use Codex weekly.
