Gemini CLI: Plan Mode Research Subagents

Gemini CLI

Gemini CLI v0.33.0 enables Plan Mode to delegate investigative tasks to built-in research subagents β€” specifically codebase_investigator and cli_help β€” before synthesizing a final plan. Plans can now be annotated with user feedback across iterations, and a new /plan copy subcommand allows duplicating plans to explore alternative approaches. Plan Mode tools have been refactored to use declarative policy rules.

Plan Mode Gets Research Subagents

Gemini CLI v0.33.0 marks a significant maturation of Plan Mode, the structured planning workflow introduced in v0.27.0. With this release, Plan Mode can now delegate investigative tasks to built-in research subagents β€” specifically codebase_investigator and cli_help β€” before synthesizing a final plan. Rather than relying solely on the primary agent's context, the planner can now spin up specialized subagents to gather facts about the codebase, review documentation, or resolve ambiguities, then fold those findings into the resulting plan. Additional custom subagents can be enabled via policy rules.

Plan Feedback Annotations and /plan copy

Plan feedback annotation also lands in this release: plans can now be annotated with user feedback across iterations, giving the agent a persistent record of what has been tried and refined. A new /plan copy subcommand allows plans to be duplicated, making it easier to branch off from a baseline and explore alternative approaches.

Declarative Policy Rules

Plan Mode tools have been refactored to use declarative policy rules rather than manual synchronization, reducing configuration complexity for advanced users who need to control which tools are available during the planning phase.
