GitHub Copilot: Auto Model Selection Becomes Mandatory for Free and Student Plans

GitHub Copilot

GitHub has eliminated manual model selection for Copilot Free and Student plan users, making auto model selection the default and only model-routing experience for these tiers. The Copilot Auto system dynamically picks the most appropriate model for each request based on task complexity, model availability, and performance. Free and Student users can still see which model handled their request but can no longer deliberately choose a specific model. Additionally, GitHub retired the (Preview) designation from Microsoft-released models.

Auto Model Selection Is Now the Only Option on Free and Student Plans

GitHub has removed manual model selection for Copilot Free and Student plan users. Auto model selection is now the default and only model-routing experience for these tiers.

How Copilot Auto Works

The Copilot Auto system dynamically picks the most appropriate model for each request based on task complexity, current model availability, and performance. The goal is to route each prompt to a model that balances quality and capacity without requiring the user to make a choice.

What Changes for Free and Student Users

Free and Student users can still see which model handled a given request, preserving transparency, but they can no longer deliberately choose a specific model. Users on paid individual and business plans retain manual model selection. The change has drawn pushback from students who relied on selecting specific frontier models for their work.

Preview Label Retired

Alongside the routing change, GitHub retired the (Preview) designation from Microsoft-released models, signaling those models have graduated to general availability within Copilot.
