GitHub Copilot: Cross-Platform Session Insights with /chronicle

GitHub Copilot

GitHub expanded the /chronicle command in Copilot CLI to aggregate session history across all major Copilot surfaces, including the cloud agent, code review, VS Code, JetBrains, and the new Copilot app. Previously limited to local CLI sessions, /chronicle now generates standup summaries, personalized usage tips, custom instruction improvements, and cost analysis from a unified cross-platform session store. Local sessions can be synced to a developer's GitHub account with a single setting, and a shareable view-only link allows teammates to see a developer's recent work. The expansion is generally available to all Copilot tiers, with Business and Enterprise users requiring administrator enablement for session syncing.

/chronicle Becomes a Cross-Platform Copilot Intelligence Layer

The /chronicle command has been significantly expanded as of June 2, 2026, evolving from a CLI-only session replay tool into a unified intelligence layer that aggregates developer activity across every major Copilot surface.

What /chronicle Does

/chronicle is a set of purpose-built subcommands that generate insights from session history. With the June 2 update, it now draws from sessions across Copilot CLI, Copilot cloud agent, Copilot code review, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, and the GitHub Copilot app.

The four main subcommands are:

  • /chronicle standup: Generates a daily summary of completed and in-progress work tied to branches and pull requests, formatted for standup meetings.
  • /chronicle tips: Analyzes session patterns to surface personalized usage recommendations specific to each developer's habits.
  • /chronicle improve: Detects friction points in a developer's interactions and suggests concrete additions to their .github/copilot-instructions.md file.
  • /chronicle reindex: Rebuilds the session store index for when data needs to be refreshed.

Cross-Platform Session Syncing

Session data from local tools (VS Code, JetBrains, CLI) can now be synced to a developer's GitHub account by enabling a setting. Once synced, insights from all platforms are available together in the GitHub Copilot app, github.com, VS Code, and JetBrains. Sessions remain private by default.

A shareable, view-only link can be generated via the CLI or through sharing settings, allowing developers to show teammates or managers a record of their recent Copilot work.

Availability

The expanded /chronicle is generally available to all Copilot plan tiers. Business and Enterprise users require administrator enablement of local session syncing before cross-platform aggregation is active. Developers can start with /chronicle in any supported workspace or ask Copilot directly about their session history.
