GitHub has completed the deprecation of Claude Sonnet 4 across all GitHub Copilot experiences as of May 6, 2026. The model is no longer available for use in any Copilot surface, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions — across IDEs, github.com, and GitHub Mobile.
What Changed
Claude Sonnet 4 has been fully retired from the GitHub Copilot model roster. Developers who had selected it as their preferred model will no longer see it in the Copilot Chat model selector. The deprecation affects all Copilot tiers and surfaces uniformly.
GitHub had signaled this deprecation in advance with an earlier upcoming-deprecation notice dated March 31, 2026, giving users approximately five weeks to migrate their workflows.
Recommended Migration Path
GitHub recommends transitioning to Claude Sonnet 4.6 as the direct replacement. Enterprise administrators who manage model policies in Copilot settings should verify that Claude Sonnet 4.6 is enabled for their organization. Once configured, it will appear in the model selector across all supported surfaces.
