GitHub Copilot: Generate and Edit Images in Chat (Preview)

GitHub CopilotView original changelog

GitHub added image generation and editing to Copilot in public preview. Developers describe an image in natural language in any Copilot chat session, including in the middle of a coding task, and the result appears inline and is saved to the project. It works in VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI.

Key Takeaways

  • Image generation and editing now live directly inside Copilot chat, with no separate tool needed.
  • Requests can be made mid-task in any chat session, and results appear inline and are saved to the project.
  • It works across VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI.
  • Admins can disable it through Copilot model policies by turning off the image model.
  • An optional "Made with AI" watermark is available but off by default.
  • Image usage is billed separately in image tokens that count toward the plan's AI credits, and the feature is in public preview.

Images from a chat prompt

GitHub Copilot can now generate and edit images from natural-language descriptions. When a user asks for an image, the selected reasoning model calls an image-generation tool, shows the result inline in the conversation and saves it to the project. The request can come from any Copilot chat session, including in the middle of a coding task, so assets such as illustrations or placeholder graphics can be created without leaving the workflow.

Where it works

The capability is available in Visual Studio Code, the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI. Editing is conversational too: users can ask Copilot to adjust an image it already produced or an existing one in the project.

Controls for organizations

Organization and enterprise owners can turn off image generation by disabling the image model in Copilot model policies. GitHub also offers an optional "Made with AI" watermark for generated and edited images. The watermark is off by default.

Availability and billing

Image generation is in public preview for Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise. Image usage is billed separately from the chat model, based on image tokens that count toward the plan's AI credits.
