GitHub has announced that GPT-4.1 will be deprecated across all GitHub Copilot experiences on June 1, 2026. From that date, the model will no longer be available in Copilot Chat, inline edits, or code completions — across IDEs, github.com, and GitHub Mobile.
What Is Being Removed
GPT-4.1 will be fully retired from the GitHub Copilot model picker on June 1, 2026. Developers and teams that have incorporated GPT-4.1 into their workflows — whether through model selection in the chat interface or API-based integrations — need to migrate before this date.
Recommended Alternative
GitHub recommends transitioning to GPT-5.5 as the direct replacement for GPT-4.1. GPT-5.5 is currently generally available in GitHub Copilot. Enterprise administrators should verify that GPT-5.5 is enabled through their Copilot model policy settings so it appears as an option for their organization's users.
