GitHub Copilot: GPT-4.1 Deprecation Scheduled for June 1, 2026

GitHub Copilot

GitHub has announced the upcoming deprecation of GPT-4.1 from all GitHub Copilot experiences, effective June 1, 2026. The model will be removed from Copilot Chat, inline edits, and code completions across all supported surfaces. GitHub recommends transitioning to GPT-5.5 as the replacement, with enterprise administrators needing to enable the alternative model through their Copilot settings policy before the deadline.

GPT-4.1 Being Retired from GitHub Copilot on June 1, 2026

GitHub has announced that GPT-4.1 will be deprecated across all GitHub Copilot experiences on June 1, 2026. From that date, the model will no longer be available in Copilot Chat, inline edits, or code completions β€” across IDEs, github.com, and GitHub Mobile.

What Is Being Removed

GPT-4.1 will be fully retired from the GitHub Copilot model picker on June 1, 2026. Developers and teams that have incorporated GPT-4.1 into their workflows β€” whether through model selection in the chat interface or API-based integrations β€” need to migrate before this date.

Recommended Alternative

GitHub recommends transitioning to GPT-5.5 as the direct replacement for GPT-4.1. GPT-5.5 is currently generally available in GitHub Copilot. Enterprise administrators should verify that GPT-5.5 is enabled through their Copilot model policy settings so it appears as an option for their organization's users.

No manual action is required to remove GPT-4.1 after the June 1 deadline β€” the model will simply no longer be available. Enterprise customers with questions about the transition can reach out to their GitHub account manager.
