GitHub Copilot: GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.2-Codex Models Deprecated

GitHub CopilotView original changelog

GitHub retired GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.2-Codex from most GitHub Copilot experiences on June 5, 2026, affecting Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask mode, agent mode, and code completions. Developers using these models explicitly are directed to switch to GPT-5.5 (replacing GPT-5.2) and GPT-5.3-Codex (replacing GPT-5.2-Codex). An exception exists for code review, where GPT-5.2 continues to be available.

GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.2-Codex Removed from GitHub Copilot

GitHub retired two OpenAI models from GitHub Copilot on June 5, 2026: GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.2-Codex. The deprecation affects the majority of Copilot surfaces, including Copilot Chat, inline code edits, ask mode, agent mode, and code completions across all plan tiers.

What Was Removed and Why

GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.2-Codex were mid-generation models in the GPT-5.x series. With newer and more capable successors now generally available in Copilot — GPT-5.5 for general chat and coding tasks, and GPT-5.3-Codex for specialized code generation — GitHub has consolidated its model roster. The removal follows a May 1, 2026 advance notice that gave developers and administrators five weeks to update their workflows.

One Exception: Code Review

GPT-5.2 continues to be available specifically within Copilot code review functionality. GPT-5.2-Codex is not available in code review and has been fully removed.

Recommended Replacements

For developers who had been explicitly selecting these models:

  • Replace GPT-5.2 with GPT-5.5 for chat, inline edits, ask mode, and agent mode
  • Replace GPT-5.2-Codex with GPT-5.3-Codex for code completion and generation workflows

Developers using Copilot's Auto model selection are unaffected, as Auto routes traffic to the best available model automatically.

Action Required for Enterprise Administrators

Copilot Enterprise and Business administrators should verify that the replacement models (GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.3-Codex) are enabled through their organization's model policies in Copilot settings. If team members report that replacement models are unavailable after the deprecation, the likely cause is a missing policy enablement in the admin console.

Broader Codex Model Timeline

This deprecation is part of a broader Codex model sunset. All earlier Codex API model versions — including GPT-5.1-Codex, GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, and GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini — are scheduled to be fully decommissioned on July 23, 2026. Any production API integrations still calling those endpoints will begin returning errors after that date.
