GitHub Copilot: GPT-5.5 Now Generally Available

GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot has added GPT-5.5, OpenAI's latest frontier model, as a generally available option across all major platforms and IDEs. According to GitHub's internal testing, GPT-5.5 delivers its strongest performance on complex, multi-step agentic coding tasks, resolving real-world coding challenges that previous GPT models could not handle. The model is available to Copilot Pro+, Business, and Enterprise subscribers and launches with a 7.5× premium request multiplier as promotional pricing. Administrators on Business and Enterprise plans must enable the GPT-5.5 policy in Copilot settings before users can select it.

GPT-5.5 Arrives in GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot has expanded its model roster with the addition of GPT-5.5, OpenAI's latest general-purpose flagship model, now generally available to subscribers. The rollout began April 24, 2026 and is being deployed gradually — users who do not immediately see the model in their model picker should check back as the rollout progresses.

Agentic Coding Performance

GitHub's testing highlights GPT-5.5's particular strength on complex, multi-step agentic coding tasks — the kind of work where the Copilot cloud agent, Copilot CLI, and VS Code agent mode are most relevant. According to GitHub, the model "resolves real-world coding challenges previous GPT models couldn't," making it especially valuable for developers who work on large codebases or rely on autonomous agent sessions that require iterative planning, tool use, and error recovery.

This positions GPT-5.5 as the recommended model for developers pushing the boundaries of what agentic coding can accomplish, rather than routine code completion or chat queries.

Plan Eligibility and Pricing

GPT-5.5 is available to the following Copilot plans:

  • Copilot Pro+
  • Copilot Business
  • Copilot Enterprise

It is not available on Copilot Free or Copilot Pro (standard). The model launches at a 7.5× premium request multiplier under promotional pricing, meaning each request to GPT-5.5 consumes 7.5 premium requests from a subscriber's monthly allocation. GitHub describes this as promotional, implying pricing may change in the future.

Supported Platforms

GPT-5.5 is accessible across GitHub Copilot's full platform footprint:

  • Visual Studio Code
  • Visual Studio
  • JetBrains IDEs
  • Xcode
  • Eclipse
  • GitHub Copilot CLI
  • GitHub Copilot cloud agent
  • github.com (web interface)
  • GitHub Mobile (iOS and Android)

Administrator Requirements

For Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise deployments, organization and enterprise administrators must explicitly enable GPT-5.5 via Copilot settings policies before end users can select the model. This requirement follows the standard governance model GitHub applies to new frontier models.
