Warp: Agent Modality Separates Terminal and AI Conversations

Rethinking How the Terminal and AI Coexist

The February 10, 2026 Warp release brought a fundamental change to how users interact with the terminal's AI capabilities. Warp retired its previous Universal Input model — which blended agent interactions inline with the terminal using visual markers like pink highlights — and replaced it with Agent Modality, a design that gives the terminal and the AI conversation view their own distinct, dedicated spaces.

The shift reflects how Warp's vision of the terminal has evolved: from a shell that happens to have AI features, to an environment where AI agents and traditional commands are equally first-class citizens, each with purpose-built interfaces.

Two Distinct Modes

Terminal Mode

The clean shell view that developers have always used: run commands, see output, navigate the file system. In Agent Modality, this view is uncluttered by agent activity — it focuses entirely on the traditional terminal experience.

Conversation View

When a developer invokes an agent, Warp opens a dedicated conversation panel. This view supports multi-turn interactions with full controls: model selection, voice input, and file/image attachments. The panel shows which conversation is active and lets users navigate between active and past conversations.

Switching between modes is deliberate: pressing Esc or the back button returns to the terminal; Cmd+Enter starts a new agent conversation. History navigation also adapts to context — the up arrow shows past shell commands in terminal mode and past prompts in conversation view.

Cloud-Synced Conversations

A key addition alongside Agent Modality is conversation persistence. Agent conversations now sync to the cloud and persist across devices, solving the frustration of losing context when switching machines. Conversations can be shared with teammates via a link, reviewed on the web, or picked up locally — enabling collaborative and asynchronous agent workflows for the first time.
