Windsurf: Claude Opus 4.6 and Fast Mode Now Available

Windsurf

Windsurf added Claude Opus 4.6 and Claude Opus 4.6 fast mode to its model lineup in early February 2026, offering developers access to Anthropic's latest frontier model directly inside the IDE. The fast mode variant delivers the same model intelligence as standard Opus 4.6 but at up to 2.5x higher output speeds, at a premium cost. Both variants launched with limited-time promotional pricing for self-serve users.

Windsurf Adds Claude Opus 4.6 to Its Model Roster

Windsurf expanded its available model selection on February 4, 2026, with the addition of Claude Opus 4.6 β€” Anthropic's latest and most capable model β€” as well as an experimental fast mode variant that prioritizes throughput over cost efficiency.

Claude Opus 4.6: Capabilities and Pricing

Claude Opus 4.6 brings meaningful improvements over its predecessor for coding-specific workflows. The model plans more carefully across longer tasks, sustains agentic work with greater reliability in larger codebases, and has improved code review and debugging capabilities β€” including better self-correction. It also features a 1M-token context window in beta, enabling it to ingest and reason over substantially larger codebases without context truncation.

Within Windsurf, Opus 4.6 launched with promotional pricing for self-serve users:

  • No thinking mode: 2x credits
  • With thinking mode: 3x credits

Opus 4.6 is available in Arena Mode's Frontier Arena and Hybrid Arena battle groups, making it directly comparable against other frontier models in real-world coding tasks.

Opus 4.6 Fast Mode: Speed at a Premium

Alongside the standard model, Windsurf introduced Opus 4.6 fast mode in research preview. Fast mode runs the same underlying Opus 4.6 model with an inference configuration optimized for output speed rather than cost efficiency, delivering up to 2.5x faster token generation compared to the standard variant.

The pricing reflects this premium:

  • No thinking (fast): 10x credits
  • With thinking (fast): 12x credits

The promotional pricing for fast mode was available until February 16, 2026. Fast mode is designed for workflows where developer time is the primary constraint and waiting on model outputs creates meaningful friction.

Tab v2 Model Selector Released to All Users

In the same release, Windsurf rolled out the Tab v2 model selector to all users β€” previously a limited release feature. Tab provides Windsurf's AI-powered code completion, and the updated model selector gives users more control over which model drives those completions.
